CU researcher on earthquake in Nepal

“In some ways the response is mobilizing very quickly but in other ways it’s painfully slow.”

Dr.Courtney Welton-Mitchell is the director of the Humanitarian Assistance Applied Research Group through the Josef Korbel School of International Studies (JKSIS) at the University of Denver. She is also a Research Associate at the Natural Hazards Center, at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She has done extensive research in Nepal as well as in Haiti on the impact of natural disaster preparedness.

After the earthquake in Haiti, Welton-Mitchell says that some of the lessons learned in the aftermath that could be applicable to Nepal are: making sure that aid is well coordinated and that funding is directed to appropriate sources.  The New York Times complied a list of agencies accepting donations for relief efforts in Nepal.

The death toll from Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal continues to rise.  As of Monday April 27th it is over 3000, with 6,500 reported as being injured.
