The Battle for Justice in Palestine

“The first thing is recognizing reality that what you have is Israeli military occupation and really a situation of colonial rule over the Palestinians”
Ali Abunimah, co-founder of Electronic Intifada and author of The Battle for Justice in Palestine and One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli Palestinian Impasse says the situation in Palestine is the last great colonial conflict of the 20th century into the 21st century “when you recognize that there’s a colonial situation that Palestinians are denied of their basic human rights by a much stronger force that considers it has a unique and privileged right to their land, then you can begin to unpick it and undo it.”

Abunimah looks at South Africa and Northern Ireland as post-colonial situations which have had varying degrees of success with a peace process and looks for models and warnings for the way forward in brokering peace between Israel and Palestine. Abunimah says Northern Ireland and South Africa “show that you can get from a seemingly intractable settler colonial situation to one of a broad based and legitimate political settlement that actually offers people a way forward.”  Abunimah contrasts the role that the US played in Northern Ireland where it was a counter balance between two extreme sides and its role as a financial supporter of the Israeli military “that means that the US has been an obstacle to peace.”
