BMOCA’s HOME Exhibition is a Compelling Exploration of Indigenous Identity

As part of their Present Box series, The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art is currently hosting an Exhibition titled HOME: Contemporary Indigenous Artists Responding. The exhibition is part of Celebration! A History of the Visual Arts in Boulder (HOVAB), a community-wide cultural event that revisits the city of Boulder’s dynamic and diverse visual arts past through a series of exhibitions, film screenings, discussions, and more. In this exhibition, local Diné/Navajo artist and CU Art Professor Melanie Yazzie gathered fellow indigenous artists to create prints which demonstrate a Native relationship to home and homeland, enmeshed in a history of defense, sacrifice, resiliency, and redefinition. The exhibition itself is going to be available through this Sunday, you don’t want to miss it.

Veronica’s note: The prints themselves are a series of compelling explorations that conjure imagery of the mythology of “home”, the perception of imposed boundaries on home, the containment of home within the self, or the divine. This is a marvelous series of prints which create an inner dialogue and comparison of home within the self and how these have shaped indigenous peoples.

KGNU’s Veronica Straight-Lingo dropped by BMOCA and spoke with the exhibition artist and organizer, Melanie Yazzie, as well as participating artist Norman Akers about the show. Melanie begins by describing how the show began.
