27th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

Hunger is a serious problem in Colorado, even in largely affluent communities like Boulder. This week letter carriers will be delivering more than just mail, as they’ll be bringing bags for individuals to put non perishable foods in for the 27th annual letter carrier food drive happening on May 11th.

Diane Santoyo, a Boulder County letter carrier has been organizing the local food drive for several years.

“What we want people to do is fill (the bags) up with nonperishable food, leave them at their box and when your letter carrier happens to make the delivery of your mail they’ll pick it up and take care of the rest for you.”

The food that is collected on May 11th will go to local food banks such as the one at the Emergency Family Assistance Association where Dough Vidulich volunteers. Vidulich says there are more than 17,000 children in Boulder County that are food insecure.  “It means that they’re not always able to rely on healthy meals three times a day.”

The letter carrier food drive is EFAA’s biggest drive of the year and it comes just as school is getting out for summer vacation. As many food insecure children rely on school lunches to provide nutrition, summer can be a time of extra pressure for these families says Vidulich.  “Many of these families rely on us then in the summer to provide good healthy meals for their children.”

The Stamp Out Hunger letter carrier food drive happens on Saturday May 11th. You can leave a bag of non perishable food items at your mailbox on that day and it will be brought to a local food bank.
