STEM Education in Longmont Schools

The Innovation Center is hosting several summer camps for kids ages 8-14 in Longmont in 2016.

Jeff Lund says that the classes will be taught by teachers and student instructors from the Innovation Center and will include classes in robotics, electronics, film and design thinking.  On-line registration is available at innovation.svvsd.org.

Students from the Innovation Center will be producing a regular series on KGNU’s Friday Morning Magazine called Tech Talks featuring interviews with local tech companies and educators and features on tech issues such as the evolution of the telephone. Tech Talks debuts on Friday April 22nd at 8.25am.

On any given school morning at the Innovation Center at Skyline High, students in the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) program will be working on their own inventions, getting Mac/Apple certified or working with local robotics and technology companies getting real world experience in STEM careers.

Jeff Lund, Instructional Program Consultant says the Innovation center is the pinnacle of the STEM program at Skyline High School. Skyline High seniors work on technological inventions from concept to prototype to completion.

In 2007, Skyline High principal Patty Quinones was charged by the school district to create a STEM program at the school. Quinones worked with CU to create a specific STEM program tailored for the students at the school which had the highest minority population and the highest rate of free and reduced lunches in the St. Vrain Valley School District.

At the Innovation Center, students also have the opportunity to become Apple Certified which enables them to get employment in Mac support.

There are currently 450 students in the STEM program at Skyline High.
