An interview with Sean Baker, director and co-writer of the recently released transgender-themed film Tangerine. While acknowledging the difficult lives of two trans women sex workers, Tangerine manages to find humor even on the “mean streets” of Los Angeles. In the process, Baker’s film makes the case for the enduring power of friendship between trans women of color, no matter the circumstances of their lives. Tangerine created quite a buzz at Sundance for both its subject matter and innovative technique, having been shot entirely on iPhones.
