(Sept. 27, 2014) In 1896, the Boulder Daily Camera advertised a Sunday meal at the original Hotel St. Julian whose grand finale was rhubarb pies and lemon pies. In the 1950s Jack Kerouac ate apple pie in Longmont and enshrined it a la mode in “On the Road.” In 1975 Charlie Papazian of Boulder declared his birthday, Jan. 23rd, as National Pie Day. Continue our rich pie history and kick up your heels at the 3rd Annual Mouse’s Pie R Square Dance. It’s Sunday, Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall upstairs from the Boulder Army Store. We’ll have plenty of pie, coffee and tea, great old-time music and lots of dancing with gentle lessons for the dancing-impaired. Please bake a savory dinner pie or sweet dessert pie and get a reduced price ticket at the door. Free professional pie-making advice will be available. Kids 12 and under get in free for this KGNU benefit event. Visit kgnu.org or call 303-449-4885 for details.
Remember: No state claims pumpkin pie as their state pie. Pumpkin Pie should be the Colorado State Pie.
Speaking of Pumpkin Pie, I’ll be the chief judge Oct. 12 at the inaugural Aurora Punkin Chunkin Pumpkin Pie Bake-Off: https://www.auroragov.org/cs/groups/public/documents/document/020891.pdf
