Global Actions Held to Support Maxima Chaupe in Her Struggle with Newmont Mining

She stands 4 ½ feet tall. She took on a mega mining corporation and won in court. Maxima Chaupe of Cajamarca, Peru has been fighting Denver’s Newmont Mining Corporation for over four years for the right to stay on her land. Newmont Mining wants her land and earlier this month, Newmont’s security forces tore down a section of her mud brick home. A Global Day of Action was organized in support of Maxima Chaupe including in Europe and Australia. Denverites turned out at Newmont’s corporate offices on Thursday to protest.
