Briana Harris, saxophonist for the nine-piece Colorado funk and soul band The Burroughs, calls in to promote their performance at KGNU’s Funk Fundraiser on November 8th at the Velvet Elk Lounge in Boulder. She describes the band’s energetic “sweaty soul music,” aimed at getting audiences dancing in a communal live atmosphere. The Burroughs have a new single, “Dat Booty,” that was released on October 24th, along with two recent singles—“Free Your Mind” and “Feeling Good”—available on streaming platforms. The conversation highlights the fun, inclusive vibe of their shows and their support for public community radio. (Interview: 10/21/25)
DJ Jules: A little interview for our Tuesday afternoon. I have on the line Brie. Brie, hey, are you there?
The Burroughs (Brie): I am here, yes.
DJ Jules: Brie, can you share with the KGNU listeners what band you are from—what Colorado sound you are providing to us?
The Burroughs: My name is Brie Harris, and I play saxophone with The Burroughs.
DJ Jules: Oh my gosh—The Burroughs! And hey, KGNU has its Funk Fundraiser coming up on Saturday, November 8th at the Velvet Elk Lounge in Boulder, and The Burroughs is playing. We’re so excited to have you.
The Burroughs: Yeah, we are really excited too. Can’t wait. It’s gonna be a great night of music and a great way to celebrate this amazing public radio station. Gonna be a ton of fun.
DJ Jules: Oh, it’s gonna be so much fun. And now, for all of the KGNU listeners who may not know The Burroughs and their sound and style, can you share with them what they should expect for this night at the Funk Fundraiser?
The Burroughs: [00:01:00] The quickest way we sum up the style and sound of our music is: we play sweaty soul music. It’s mostly original music, but inspired by a lot of great soul, funk, jam, and rock artists, and really just intended to get people on the floor dancing and participating in this communal experience with us live in a venue.
We are a nine-member, original funk and soul project with a four-piece horn section and a full rhythm section, and a great, super-energetic frontman. And it’s always a party when we play for folks.
DJ Jules: How cool is that—that KGNU listeners and the Colorado Front Range community can say, “I’m gonna go get down and sweaty and funky tonight and raise money for a public radio station.” It’s a double whammy in my book.
The Burroughs: Yeah, absolutely. It’s gonna be so fun. A nine-piece original funk and soul band from Colorado—you can’t [00:02:00] go wrong. When you hear that nine-piece funk band, that’s quality right there.
DJ Jules: Hopefully it doesn’t intimidate people or scare them away.
The Burroughs: We try to make it a very communal, friendly affair that’s welcome to anyone who wants to come get down with us. And it’ll be a blast too—at the Velvet Elk specifically.
DJ Jules: It’s gonna be a great time on Saturday, November 8th. KGNU’s Funk Fundraiser with The Burroughs playing. And hey—you shared with the KGNU listeners what they can expect at a Burroughs show. What about your sound? Do y’all have any new music coming out that we can stay tuned for?
The Burroughs: We have a brand-new single dropping this Friday, October 24th, titled “Dat Booty.” In these trying times, we wrote a song celebrating butts. It’s a super fun listen, and we’re excited to share it with everyone. We also released two other singles earlier this year—“Free Your Mind” and “Feeling Good.”
If you want a recent peek into our sound and style, that stuff is available [00:03:00] everywhere you listen to music.
DJ Jules: Amazing. So KGNU listeners can listen to your new song this Friday—“Dat Booty”—and then they can shake that booty at Velvet Elk Lounge for the fundraiser on November 8th. It’s gonna be so much fun.
Brie, thank you so much for taking the time to call in and chat with me today. I am so excited to shake it and have some fun with you on November 8th.
The Burroughs: We’re thrilled. We love KGNU and really appreciate the work you all do in the community. Thanks so much for having me on air.
DJ Jules: I’m gonna play a quick legal, and then I’m gonna play some Burroughs for all the KGNU listeners so they can get a little taste of it.
The Burroughs: Perfect.
DJ Jules: Amazing. Thanks, Brie. You have a lovely day.
The Burroughs: You too. Thanks. Bye.
