DJ Feature: Elena

What shows do you host on KGNU and how long have you been with the station?

I have been with the station since around 1979 or 1980! I currently host the first Tuesday of the month Hemispheres news program, a Corriente program several times a year, and occasional other shorter features or interviews. In the past, I used to host a monthly MSA, and started the predecessor to Corriente, called Tierra Mestiza, with Betto Arcos.

Who is your favorite artist and/or album of all time?

There’s no way to name only one! My main influences are singer-songwriters in English and Spanish, especially Nueva Canción musicians, Silvio Rodriguez, Dúo Guardabarranco, Bruce Cockburn, Victor Jara, and way too many more to name.

What is your Zodiac sign and what (if anything) does it say about you?

I am a Scorpio, with moon in Aries and Leo rising. I really don’t know very much about what it says about me except that I feel very connected to Water and consider myself a Water defender whenever it’s needed. There are way more people than myself who know more about the Zodiac so I’ll leave it to them to interpret.

If you could have any musician’s record collection, whose would it be?

Silvio Rodriguez

What song do you never get tired of playing on air?

Saca la Voz by Ana Tijoux, and when I did MSAs, song to the Last Whale by Graham Nash and David Crosby

What is something most people would be surprised to learn about you?

I have a very large tattoo on my back that I drew. and a dear friend did. And despite being an avid birdwatcher, I am also a crazy cat lady with 4 feline housemates.
