I Can’t Breathe: A Killing on Bay Street

On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner was killed by police officer Daniel Panteleo on Bay Street in Staten Island New York.

The final moments of his life were captured on cellphone video and allowed the world to hear Garner’s last words “I can’t breathe” repeated 11 times.

“I can’t breathe” became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement and is the title of the new book by Rolling Stone contributor and best-selling author Matt Taibbi. The book chronicles the policing of communities of color and the impact of zero-tolerance laws and the lack of accountability for police officers who kill people.
