Humanitarian House International: Helping Refugees with housing solutions

Figures released earlier this year by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees sayd that the number of refugees in the world exceeded 50 million for the first time since the second world war. Half the world’s refugees are children and the majority of refugees live in tents in refugee camps in often dire conditions. The tents are meant to be a temporary solution but many refugees end up living in tents for many years. A newly formed Colorado based non profit is hoping to help with that situation and is focusing its efforts on designing and developing housing solutions. Their vision is to “save the world, one house at a time.” KGNU’s Maeve Conran spoke with Rob Melich, Program Manager with Humanitarian House International and Stuart Ohlson, the President of HHI who is an architect of sky-scraping, award-winning residential buildings around the world. Following his retirement, Mr. Ohlson turned passionate and trained eyes on the plight of earthquake victims in Haiti.
