25th Anniversary of the Bombing of Earth First! Leader Judi Bari

“They were right by Oakland High School and a car bomb exploded under her car seat.”

On May 24th 1990, Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney, organizers with Earth First! were traveling in a car in California when a pipe bomb exploded under Judi’s seat, critically injuring her. The FBI charged Bari and Cherney with planting the bomb and no other suspects were ever investigated. Bari had received death threats for her work to stop the deforestation in the California redwoods with Earth First.

The bombing galvanized the environmental activist movement in California and continues to inspire activists who are still working to preserve the redwoods in California.

Betty Ball with the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center was working with Judi and Darryl in California at the time of the bombing.
