GRANADA, CO-Amache internment camp opened August 27, 1942 following the signing of Executive Order 9066 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. One hundred twenty-six thousand Japanese Americans, two-thirds of whom were US citizens were forced into camps during World War II. Located in southeastern Colorado near the small town of Granada, this was the 39th year that the people who lived and died there were remembered. The steady winds at this year’s pilgrimage reminded those who once lived there of the prevailing windy conditions that remain in their memories of imprisonment at Amache.

Amache Survivors Preserve History through Annual Pilgrimage Early Morning News
This Friday an Amache exhibit opening will take place at the University of Denver Museum of Anthropology. Objects found at Amache excavations will be displayed. The event will include a 6:00 pm appearance by Lawson Inada, former poet laureate of Oregon. Inada was imprisoned in Amache as a young boy.
