On September 3rd 1964, the Wilderness Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The Wilderness Act remains the country’s highest form of land protection.
In Colorado 3.6 million acres have been protected as wilderness in the past 50 years. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, photographer John Fielder will present a slide show of wilderness areas at an event to benefit the Sierra Club’s ongoing efforts to preserve wilderness in Colorado.
The event is happening Tuesday, Sep 9 7:00p to 9:00p at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder.
Bill Ikler, the Wilderness Chair with the Indian Peaks Group of the Sierra Club, has been instrumental in the creation of some of the state’s wilderness areas. He tells KGNU’s Maeve Conran about the impact of the Wilderness Act on Colorado and of the work yet to be done to preserve the remaining wild spaces in the state.
