Budget Negotiations

Passing a budget is the next big item on the calendar for state lawmakers. Earlier this week Colorado received a rosy budget forecast. Bente Birkeland has more…

State lawmakers will have about 250 million more dollars to work with than was projected last December. Republican Senator Kevin Lundberg of Berthoud is a member of the joint budget committee… “The decisions become a little simpler for the joint budget committee.”

But there are conflicting proposals. Republicans want to send a ballot question to voters to issue bonds for major road projects, while some Democrats don’t want to lock in state money long-term for roads and instead want more money to go to education and other priorities.

“The word feeding frenzy comes to my mind when we speak of a lot of money on the table.”

Passing a budget is the only requirement lawmakers must do during their four month long-legislative session
