People gathered at the state capitol in Denver today for the 4th annual Right to Rest Fest which supports legislation being introduced again at the state house that would allow homeless people to be in public spaces without fear of harassment. The Right to Rest legislation was originally introduced 4 years ago to counteract a growing trend of laws in Front Range cities that disproportionately impact the homeless community, like urban camping bans.

Rhonda Romero with Denver Homeless Out Loud told KGNU that this years festival builds on the work done last year by legislators and their supporters. The 2018 “Colorado Right to Rest Act”, has been introduced in the current session by Representatives Joe Salazar and Jovan Moltan and establishes basic rights for persons experiencing homelessness, including, but not limited to, the right to use and move freely in public spaces, to rest in public spaces, to eat or accept food in any public space where food is not prohibited, to occupy a legally parked vehicle, and to have a reasonable expectation of privacy of one’s property.
