It’s been a dry December. Last Thursday’s sprinkling of snow ended a 65 day dry spell for the Front Range. But despite the lack of snow, snow sculptors from around the state descended on Berthoud this past weekend to participate in the Colorado State Snow Sculpting Competition.

Colorado State Snow Sculpting Competition 2017 Maeve Conran
11 teams in all created their masterpieces, most working through the night on Friday to make the 10am Saturday morning judging cut off. The warmer weather was definitely an issue, particularly in making snow available to the sculptors. Steve Mercia, one of the co founders of the event was also the official snow maker.
“It was a big challenge making the snow, I started right there after Thanksgiving, I had a day that I was able to make snow and then the next 3, 4 days was 70 plus (degrees.)
The winner of the Colorado state snow sculpting competition in Berthoud was “We Otter Openz Clamz,” by High Plains Carvers, from Colorado Springs.
