Our Guest on this week’s Trends Podcast is neo-expressionist, abstract artist and painter, Lio Bravo Bumbankini. Bumbankini is a Congolese-American visual artist from Denver. He is currently in residence at Eldorado Springs Art Center and shares his story of growing up in a Congolese neighborhood in Brussels, with powerful roots in social-political activism and African art.
During the Black Lives Matter protest in Denver, Bumbankini began searching for ways he could transform black trauma into art. KGNU’s Rossana Longo-Better spoke with Bumbankini about his work and the way it fits into a narrative of the art that history has often ignored. His next exhibition will be at The Sunset Soundbath Nidra.

Storytellers of Color: Congolese-American Artist Isn’t Trying To Fit Into Traditional Art Narratives Rossana Longo-Better
Storytellers of Color airs on the second Monday of each month as part of A Public Affair on KGNU. The major goal of the show is to provide a safe space for communicators of color, through a series of conversations, to elevate their voices and discuss issues of equality in the media. The show is inspired by recent gatherings of various working groups, including Latinx Voices, organized by Diamond Hardiman from Free Press’ News Voices Colorado Project, and Journos of Color Network led by Tina Griego, reporter, editor, and coach from Colorado News Collaborative.
The Storytellers of Color series are a collaborative effort, with an open invitation to other storytellers to come into our airwaves, to tell their stories, and occupy the safe space we are providing every second Monday of the month.
