Studies Show Owning A Gun Doubles Gun Fatality Risk

The US has more gun deaths in one month than any other high in-income country has for almost an entire year. In 2020, gun violence skyrocketed in the US, killing more than 45,000 people.

KGNU’s Alexis Kenyon spoke with Dr. Garen Wintemute, an emergency room physician and director of the University of California’s Firearm Violence Research Center who says, research shows, owning a gun increases your chances of dying by gunshot by 100 percent. Since the pandemic began, he says, the number of people who own guns in the US is higher than ever before.
