Third confirmed Broomfield measles case causes outbreak declaration

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) declared a measles outbreak this week, as a third case linked to Broomfield High School has been confirmed. This declaration was made following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC’s, guidelines, as they define an outbreak as three or more associated cases. While the Boulder Valley School District has excluded unvaccinated staff and students from two Broomfield campuses, vaccinated individuals will be allowed to continue attending those schools.

Measles diagnoses have been on the rise in Colorado, as according to the CDPHE, there were only 6 cases of measles from 2014 to 2024. In the last two years alone, there have been 40 confirmed cases, and two separate outbreak declarations. More information about potential measles exposure locations and potential disease symptoms can be found on CDPHE’s website.

Colorado AI healthcare regulation passes first legal hearings

A pair of bills to restrict the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare, including banning therapists from using chatbots with patients, passed their first hearings at the Capitol.

The proposals would prohibit mental health providers from using chatbots to interact with patients or independently recommend treatment plans … and AI companies would be barred from misrepresenting their chatbots as human therapists.

Medical clinicians would also need to tell their patients when and how they’re using AI. Democratic Representative Junie Josephs is a main sponsor of one of the bills… and says it’s not an outright AI ban.

Colorado State House District 10 Representative Junie Joseph said, “It sets the rules of the road by requiring transparent disclosure of how it is used and what human oversight exists and prohibits misleading representations, especially when a tool presents itself as equivalent to a licensed professional or implies confidentiality.”

The measures would also ban insurance companies from using AI to deny coverage without meaningful human oversight. And those decisions would have to be based on patients’ individual medical histories, not just statistical data.

This story was reported by Rae Solomon for the Colorado Capitol News Alliance.

Large winter storm to hit Colorado foothills today

Winter storm conditions are expected throughout western Colorado today, bringing heavy snow and potentially dangerous driving conditions, based on the National Weather Service’s (NWS) advisory. The foothills could see up to six inches of snow, and more elevated regions could experience up to 14 inches of snow throughout the day. Weather authorities have also advised that the wind will be gusting up to 40 miles per hour, adding to travel difficulties.

A related weather pattern is bringing a series of unusually early spring storms to eastern Colorado and the Great Plains region of the US, potentially causing a relatively early tornado season. These storms are related to winter temperature predictions across the eastern US, which are unseasonably warm, with potential for nearly 80 degree weather as far north as Washington D.C.
