Wind and Power Outages

We can expect high winds across the area today, and Xcel has announced possible power shutoffs to decrease the risk of fire. On the Morning Magazine, we’ll talk to Xcel and the Boulder County Office of Disaster Management about what to expect and how to prepare.

High wind warnings are in effect in Boulder, Larimer, Weld, Jefferson, Gilpin, and Clear Creek Counties. The National Weather Service says gusts are likely to reach 70-90 miles per hour for most of the Front Range mountains, foothills, and wind-prone areas near the base of the foothills. Winds are expected to spread into the I-25 corridor early this afternoon into the evening.

And with high winds and low relative humidity, those same counties plus Denver, Broomfield, Arapahoe, and Adams Counties are under red flag warnings. The National Weather Service says to take extra care to avoid activities that could spark wildfires, and have a wildfire action plan in place for yourself and your family.

Denver Council Rejects Contract with Key Lime Air Over ICE Flights

Denver council has rejected a city contract with Key Lime Air, because of the airline’s role in helping ICE, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with its mass deportations. The Denver Post reports that the contract was for Key Lime Air to use 1,200 square feet of storage space at Denver International Airport. Key Lime provides cargo feeder services to UPS at that airport, and also owns an airline called Denver Air Connection that operates out of DIA. It also flies passenger flights out of Centennial. Eleven of the thirteen Denver City Council members voted to reject the contract, and several specifically cited Key Lime’s contract with ICE as the reason. Colorado Newsline reported that Key Lime Air operated 83 flights for ICE in September.

The United States Justice Department is suing Colorado, among other states, for voter data. According to the Colorado Sun, the department said it is suing 18 states plus Fulton County, Georgia, for QUOTE “failing to produce statewide voter registration lists upon request.” END QUOTE. The federal government has sought names, dates of birth, residential addresses, driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers from state governments. Colorado Secretary of State said on Thursday, after the lawsuit was filed, that the Trump Administration does not have a legal right to that information, and that she wants to continue to protect Colorado’s elections and democracy. The Associated Press reports that the Justice Department has asked a total of 26 states for voter registration data in recent months.
