RISE Abortion Clinic Draws Protestors

Yesterday, anti-abortion groups organized a rally outside of the recently opened Boulder RISE Collective abortion clinic. Around 40 protestors were there, from anti-abortion organizations that have been active in Colorado for several years, like a group called Democrats for Life, and another called the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs (AAPLOG). Catherine Wheeler, who is part of AAPLOG, said “we’re out here to raise awareness. We are hoping that the lease holder of the space will become aware of the harms that are happening in his facility and that facilities like this will close, but also that the state will start really caring about women’s health.”

RISE Collective, which opened less than three months ago, was formed by several former employees at the Boulder Abortion Clinic (BAC), which made national headlines when it closed in May after Dr. Warren Hern retired. The BAC was one of just a handful of clinics in the country that provided abortions in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. Now RISE has opened to fill that gap. In November, the aforementioned anti-abortion groups, which are made up of members from around the state, held a public event at the Boulder Library targeting the clinic, called “Challenges to the Health and Safety of Boulder Women.” Abortion at any trimester is protected under Colorado state law. Boulder Plans New Arts Venue Ahead of Sundance

Plans are in development in East Boulder for a new 2,500-seat arts venue and 500 housing units. The space is intended to fill a gap in performance spaces for the Sundance Film Festival beginning in 2027. The plans also include a hotel, retail and restaurant spaces, and 55,000 square feet for local art and cultural uses.

The development would be located at Pearl Pkwy and Foothills Pkwy, which is currently home to several small businesses including Sanitas Brewing Company, which recently announced it is permanently closing on Dec. 20.

Financing relies on a public-private partnership that would create a special taxing district to issue bonds for public infrastructure, which requires approval from the Boulder City Council. The Boulder-based developer, Conscience Bay Company, is seeking final approval over the next year, with construction projected to start in late 2028 and completion set for the early 2030s.

DPS Buys Parking Lots for $2.5 Million

Denver Public Schools (DPS) purchased two adjacent downtown parking lots on Sherman St. for $2.5 million, securing nearly 100 spots just one block from its headquarters. The acquisition helps replace a separate leased lot being redeveloped into apartments.

The lots will provide essential parking for the over 900 DPS staff working at the 1860 Lincoln St. Headquarters, who currently only share 600 parking spaces. The deal was financed using a certificate of participation, meaning investors are repaid through revenue generated by parking fees, ensuring no educational funds were utilized.
