Learn how a local mycologist is helping to make Boulder County’s forests less prone to wildfires

The use of fungi, and the root system of mushrooms called mycelium, are being infused into the ground here in Boulder.

Zach Hedstrom is a local mycologist working to help make Boulder County’s forests less prone to wildfires by turning branches, logs and wood chips into rich humus rather than fire fodder. He’s the founder and owner of Boulder Mushroom.

Hedstrom was awarded a $100,000 grant from Boulder County and the City of Boulder’s Department of Climate Initiatives, half paid by the county and half by the city. Boulder Mushroom partnered with Boulder Watershed Collective and Grama Grass and Livestock, to help tackle the problem of downed timber and limbs.

Hedstrom joined KGNU’s Don Davis in the studio to discuss his project and the impact on the environment.
