Anti-Trump rallies take place across Colorado

Demonstrations against the Trump administration took place in cities across the United States on Saturday, including events in Boulder and Denver.

Their uniting themes were opposition to the administration policies on immigrants and civil rights, and on the threat to democracy.

In Denver, the Colorado State Patrol estimated three thousand people gathered at the state Capitol, according to Colorado Newsline.

Elsewhere in the state, people rallied in Longmont, Fort Collins, Grand Junction, and Colorado Springs.

In Boulder, people rallied along Broadway and Table Mesa. According to KGNU’s Don Davis, who attended the protest, there were well over 1,000 people out on the streets carrying signs expressing concern about Trump acting like a king, when the United States is supposed to be a democracy.

Earlier, Boulder organizers said on social media that Trump has, in their words, “refused to heed the unanimous decision by the Supreme Court to return a legal resident … to the US,” in violation of the constitution. That was an apparent reference to the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man wrongfully deported to El Salvador, where he was briefly held at the notorious CECOT prison. The Supreme Court agreed with a lower court ruling that the Trump administration must “facilitate” his return, but the administration says it can’t. Abrego Garcia has since been moved from CECOT, though he remains imprisoned in El Salvador.

Don Davis spoke with several protestors in Boulder including the organizer of Boulder’s protest – Barb Kish, with the 50501 Movement. Davis also spoke with Kari – a safety marshall who moved to Boulder a few months ago from Maryland because of climate change’s impacts on that state and a participant named Noel.

In Denver about 3,000 people gathered at the Colorado state capitol. It was the second Hands Off! rally in Denver this month.

Many attendees carried signs and banners calling for protections for immigrants and civil liberties.

Alice, who traveled from Georgetown, said she’s worried about the erosion of due process and civil rights, especially when it comes to the treatment of immigrants.

Lynn, a protester from Denver, said she came out to stand up for constitutional protections for everyone, especially the LGBTQ community.
