Weed Between the Lines: Marijuana use and employment law

This week the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that an employer has the right to fire a worker for marijuana use outside of work hours, even in states where marijuana is legal. Brandon Coats, a former Dish Network employee from Denver, was a medical marijuana card holder and a quadraplegic who used the drug to ease muscle spasms.  Dish fired him after a random drug test. Coats  filed a lawsuit against his former employer but the state Supreme Court upheld an earlier decision which said employers can fire workers for off-site marijuana use.
