Boulder Employee Union Accuses County of Negotiating in Bad Faith

The Boulder County Employee Workers Union is saying the county is not negotiating in good faith after several legal challenges have halted Boulder County Housing Authority and Boulder County Public Health inclusion in the union’s collective bargaining rights.

The county workers union say the stalling challenges are evidence the county is negotiating in bad faith, however the county says that the timeline is typical of foundational negotiations between unions and local governing bodies.

Gloria Handyside, spokesperson for the county, told the Boulder Reporting Lab that, in addition to the delays being typical, the county is using outside legal counsel as part of its responsibility as a governing body. She added that a process like this usually takes about a year.

The Boulder Reporting Lab says the delayed negotiations are feeling high-stakes as 31 persons were laid off with a total of 90 jobs cut as the county faces a 13 million dollar budget deficit.

The union has continued to push for a quicker turnaround on its goal, including affirm worker wage protection in the short and long term.

Polis Admin Blocked from Immigration Compliance Lawsuit

A Judge in Denver stopped the Polis Administration from trying to dismiss a lawsuit that blocked certain state employees from complying with a federal immigration subpoena. The Polis administration is now ordered to respond to the lawsuit within a week.

At the center of the lawsuit is state employee Scott Moss, who didn’t cooperate with ICE, citing concern of violated state laws that overlap with a law protecting civil immigration status – notably a law signed by Polis this past May.

This lawsuit now stands in  the way of Polis’ goal of complying with federal immigration officials by giving them sponsor data of undocumented persons in the state.

CO Commercial Drivers Licenses Audited, Searching for Illegal Immigrants Operating Vehicles

The federal policy change came after a deadly Florida truck crash in August, killing three people involving a driver who made an illegal U-turn. Jennifer Giambi, state Department of Motor Vehicles, said licenses issued before this pause are still valid.

In addition to the new rule, the Trump administration released an order in May saying commercial truck drivers would lose their licenses if they cannot read and understand traffic signs and communicate in English at weigh stations, border patrol entrances and agricultural checkpoints.

Of the 126,525 people in Colorado licensed to drive 18-wheelers, school buses and trucks carrying hazardous materials, 1,745 are immigrants who do not have permanent legal status to live in the United States.

In Colorado, all applicants for commercial driver’s licenses, whether they are immigrants or not, must pass a written test, complete a federally approved safety course and pass a federally approved road skills test.
