NREL Renamed by Trump Admin

Federal officials renamed the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) located in Golden on Monday. The name was changed to the National Laboratory of the Rockies, removing all mention of renewable energy. The decades old energy research lab was created in the fallout of the 1973 oil crisis, which spiked the price of oil and imports to the U.S.

Now, Assistant Energy Secretary Audrey Robertson said, “We are no longer picking and choosing energy sources. Our highest priority is to invest in the scientific capabilities that will restore American manufacturing, drive down costs, and help this country meet its soaring energy demand.”

The Trump administration laid off over 100 workers at NREL’s Golden campus in May. The lab has significantly cut back on solar and wind power research as it reduces spending on renewable energy.

CU Anschutz Agrees to Pay COVID Vaccine Lawsuit Settlement

The University of Colorado Anschutz will pay more than $10 million to settle a lawsuit brought on by students and staff who sued in 2021 after being denied religious exemptions to the campus’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate. The Thomas More Society announced on Monday that CU Anschutz has also agreed to make policy changes.

The Thomas More society, which represents plaintiffs in religious liberty cases nationwide, called the suit one of the only cases in the country where plaintiffs have received money damages over a COVID vaccination mandate.

Peter Breen, the Thomas More Society’s executive vice president and head of litigation called the 18 plaintiffs heroes “because they had the courage to say ‘no’ when their religious freedoms were trampled, people of faith across the country now enjoy stronger protections.”

The case entered mediation after the appellate court’s ruling leading to Monday’s settlement. The details of the settlement agreement have not been released.

Eighteen-Year-Old Killed by Greeley Police

The Weld County Coroner’s Office has identified the young man shot and killed by a Greeley police officer last week near North Colorado Medical Center as 18-year-old Aden Alcide Jeannoutot. The incident occurred after a traffic stop when Jeannoutot, who had an outstanding felony arrest warrant, allegedly failed to follow police orders.

The shooting took place last Wednesday afternoon at 3:50 p.m. near 16th Ave and 21st St. Officials report that Jeannoutot, who was a passenger, ignored multiple commands to exit the vehicle and instead reached toward a bag in his lap, prompting the officer to fire.

The incident is under investigation. According to the Daily Camera, findings will be reviewed by the District Attorney’s office, which will determine if the officer is cleared of charges or if the case will be referred to a grand jury.
