Unaffiliated Voters Can Vote in 2018 Primary Election for First Time KGNU News

May 29th is the last day for voters who are affiliated with a political party to change or withdraw their affiliation if they wish to vote in a different party’s primary election. Ahead of Colorado’s June 26th primary, KGNU’s Roz Brown talks with Boulder County Clerk, Hillary Hall, to discuss the voting process for unaffiliated voters.

“In a time where states are making it harder to vote, here in Colorado, laws are actually making it more accessible to vote. Because really, if everyone can’t participate, it doesn’t really promote democracy.” – Boulder County Clerk, Hillary Hall

If voters are registered as unaffiliated, on June 4th they will be mailed both a Democratic and Republican ballot, but can only send only one back. This new Colorado law allows for only one primary ballot vote, or it will not be counted. Voting for either ballot will not affiliate the voter with either political party.

Important dates:

May 29. Last day for voters who are affiliated with a political party to change or withdraw their affiliation if they wish to vote in a different party’s primary election.

June 4-8. Ballots mailed to voters. Unaffiliated voters will receive ballots from both Dems and Rs. Choose only one. See details below.

June 18. Last day for an individual to submit a voter registration application and still receive a ballot in the mail.

June 26. Primary election. Polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Nov. 6. General election

Voters can register unaffiliated, or for a political party, online at GoVoteColorado.com.
