Safeway and Albertsons strike

Union workers at Safeway and Albertsons stores in four Colorado cities are on strike, after months of collective bargaining failed to produce a new contract.

Members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 in Estes Park, Fountain, and Pueblo stores went on strike yesterday, along with workers at the distribution center in Denver, according to the Denver Post.

The union is calling the strike at the Safeway and Albertsons stores a limited walkout, intended to show how serious they are, and to minimize the impact on shoppers and other workers that a widespread strike would cause.

Union members say they are on strike because of the company’s unfair labor practices, which they say include bad-faith bargaining.

If the initial work stoppage doesn’t lead to a contract, the union, which represents about 23,000 employees, says the strike could expand to stores in Boulder, Denver and other Colorado cities.

Flatiron Flyer measles case

A Boulder county resident infected with measles rode the Regional Transportation District’s (RTD) Flatiron Flyer six times between the dates of June 3 and June 6. The unidentified resident was fully vaccinated, according to The Denver Post.

The two shots of the vaccine have a 97% success rate in blocking measles.

It is the state’s 15th case this year, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

State health officials say that people should monitor themselves for symptoms for the next 21 days if they visited the following locations: the RTD Flatiron Flyer between Denver and Boulder both ways from 6:45 to 9:35 a.m. and from 4:05 to 7:15 p.m. on June 3, June 5 and June 6; the Market Building at 1400 16th St., Denver, from 8 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. June 3-6; Little Finch Coffee Shop at 1490 16th St., Denver, from noon to 2:15 p.m. on June 4 and June 5; Whole Foods at 1701 Wewatta St., Denver, from noon to 2:30 p.m. on June 4; and Rosetta Hall at 1109 Walnut St., Boulder, from 7:30 to 10:45 p.m. on June 6.

Symptoms include a cough, runny nose, red eyes and a fever. A rash starts about four days after someone begins to feel contagious.

Smilianska sentenced

The woman convicted of killing Boulder cyclist Magnus White nearly two years ago has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Yeva Smilianska was found guilty of reckless vehicular homicide in April. She struck and killed 17-year-old White as he rode his bike on Diagonal Highway, in July 2023.

In addition to the four year prison term, the 24-year-old Smilianska was sentenced to three years of mandatory probation, according to the Daily Camera.

Magnus White was a rising star in cycling at the time of his death. He was about to go to Scotland for a race, and then complete high school at Boulder High.

Investigators say that Smilianska was probably asleep at the wheel at the time of the crash.

Prosecutors had asked for the maximum sentence of six years.
