Resistance Radio: One Billion Rising

On Saturday February 17th, people from all of the Front Range gathered at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts for the One Billion Rising March. The marchers walked and chanted their way to the Capital to raise awareness for the many types of violence women experience throughout their lives. According to organizers of the march, one in three women have experienced or will experience violence in their lives, and those women represent one billion of the women around the world. The march’s organizer, Beth Leyba, said this number increases to four in five women in indigenous communities.

KGNU’s Emma Gibson reports that The One Billion Rising March in Denver was an inter-sectional event that focused on domestic violence and its intersection with racism, homophobia, trans phobia and ableism.

The event consisted of a flashmob, poetry readings, testimonies from domestic violence survivors, and booths with resources for women and men experiencing or perpetrating violence.
