Resistance Radio: Fairview Students for a Democratic Society

“So we’re trying to bring that feeling to everyone at Fairview and get them to realize that everybody is…all in this together.”

Jordan Buchman, a Junior at Fairview High in Boulder says the group formed in the immediate aftermath of the 2016 presidential election. “We were formed basically the day after the election last year, because most of us were Bernie Sanders supporters and I think that we were just disillusioned after the Democratic primary concluded, and we just assumed that we would be in for four years of sort of a mediocre Democratic president in Hillary Clinton, but after the election we realized that this was not going to be a normal term and we had to do something about it and we had to… get Fairview students organized.”

While the core membership group in small (7-10 students) Buchman says they work on issues that get the larger student body involved. They are behind efforts to get BVSD to divest from Wells Fargo. They also organized a protest against Milo Yiannopoulos at CU Boulder earlier this year.

Buchman says that one of the goals of Fairview SDS is to get the student body to get involved in broader issues that impact others in society. “I think that definitely a lot of students at Fairview, their main concern is that their individual rights will be taken away under a Trump administration, such as, I know that a lot of gay students that I know, were rightfully terrified about what Trump is going to do, but I feel that there’s not a lot of solidarity among students at Fairview. They don’t think about how Trump’s actions will…affect everybody as opposed to just them. So we’re trying to bring that feeling to everyone at Fairview and get them to realize that everybody is…all in this together.”

Fairview Students for a Democratic Society are one of the groups organizing a May Day event in Boulder that starts at 5.30pm at the bandshell in downtown Boulder.
