Parkinson’s: living with the disease, caretaking, and advocacy Maeve Conran
April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. Around one million people in the United States are living with the disease — including a member of the KGNU community.
Longtime news volunteer Steve Miller was diagnosed with Parkinson’s a year ago. He joined co-host Maeve Conran for a call-in show on Parkinson’s along with guests Dr. Michael Korsmo, Kevin Kwok, and Gail Gitin.
Dr. Michael Korsmo is an assistant professor of neurology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He specializes in movement disorders.
Kevin Kwok is a board member for the Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson’s. He has been living with Early-Onset, also known as Young-Onset Parkinson’s disease, since 2009. He is also an advocate for people with PD and is an advisor for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. He has traveled to Washington, D.C. and addressed the FDA.
Gail Gitin is an advocate for care partners. She is on the Boulder Parkinson’s Connection Committee that supports local members with Parkinson’s and their care partners.
