Outsources: Transphobia, Racism and the Strength to Carry On

Angela Palermo speaks with African American trans woman CeCe McDonald who, after surviving a transphobic and racist attack in June 2011 in Minneapolis,  became an outspoken advocate for trans people and the imprisoned.  In an unmistakable case of “victim blaming”, CeCe ended up serving nineteen months in an all-male prison for the “crime” of defending herself against a violent assault.  We discuss the June 2011 attack, her experiences with the transphobic and racist justice system, the international Free CeCe Campaign that helped secure her early release and the Black Lives Matter movement.  CeCe also gives us a preview of the upcoming documentary Free CeCe, co-produced by trans actress Laverne Cox.
