Outsources producer Angela Palermo speaks with transgender radio journalist Lewis Wallace.
Lewis was, until recently, a field correspondent for the public radio program Marketplace. He lost his job with Marketplace earlier this month for an essay he posted on the website Medium entitled “Objectivity is dead, and I’m okay with it.” In that post, he questioned whether fair-minded reporters can cover “morally reprehensible” positions like white supremacy or transphobia in an “objective” fashion.
During the interview, Lewis discusses how he got into radio journalism, the sorts of stories he has covered in his career, the most salient points of his blog post, Marketplace’s reasons for firing him, reactions of other journalists to his dismissal, his fears for the future of journalism and the “free press,” and other topics.
