No one detained in Denver ICE raid yesterday, says CORRN

The Colorado Rapid Response Network (CORRN) reported what they called an active ICE raid yesterday morning in Southeast Denver. At 11:45 a.m., CORRN said immigration agents were spotted in two pickup trucks near W Alaska Pl and S Hazel St. They later reported that ICE left the area, and that CORRN confirmers ensured no one was detained.

The Colorado Rapid Response Network is a coalition of Colorado organizations that runs a statewide ICE activity hotline and trains volunteers to spot and confirm ICE and deescalate ICE incidents.

In the last three days, they have reported confirmed ICE sightings in Denver, Grand Junction, and Colorado Springs. One of those resulted in a detainment – ICE detained a man in Colorado Springs on Tuesday.

Orgs seek intervention in Xcel data center tariff

Yesterday, public interest organizations filed a petition with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) seeking intervention in Xcel Energy’s proposed tariff for data centers and other large load customers.

Xcel announced the tariff in April, after orders from the PUC. The tariff is aimed at ensuring new data centers pay their way and that other utility customers don’t get hit with the costs. Consumer advocates say it is a step in the right direction.

Rewiring America and Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP) are the two organizations that filed the petition. They said they hope to ensure the PUC adopts the strongest possible protections for residential utility customers, to prevent electricity cost increases and minimize data centers’ harmful impacts to the grid, while ensuring that load growth supports affordability, reliability, and Colorado’s clean energy transition.

The groups, who are being represented by Earthjustice, also said that with the Colorado legislature’s postponement of legislation placing guardrails on data centers, it is even more important for the PUC to take meaningful action in the proceeding.

Boulder library trustees recognize employee union

The Boulder Public Library District Board of Trustees voted unanimously this week to recognize an employee union. The employees announced their efforts to unionize in October.

In November 2022, Boulder County voters voted to form the library district, funded by a property tax increase. Formerly, the library system was funded by the city through city sales taxes. Under the old system, workers had the protection of the Boulder Municipal Employee Association. Under the new district, there is no such protection.

In Jun. 2023, Colorado passed the Protections for Public Workers Act, which establishes rights for Colorado employees of quasi-governmental entities like hospitals, universities, public schools, and special districts like the library to organize.

In December, library employee Rachel Garfield-Levine explained to KGNU that union efforts didn’t stem from any grievance. Rather, employees wanted a mechanism in place to protect the benefits they currently have.

“We are an amazing library system and we wanna stay that way in so many ways,” said Garfield-Levine. “And a great way to get fantastic staff is to be a library district that offers that fantastic protection, that assurance that these things that you’re getting now, you will continue to get.”

The next step in the process will be contract negotiations between union leaders and the Board of Trustees.
