No Kings drew over 8 million nationwide

Organizers estimate that 8 million people took to the streets all over the country Saturday, for “No Kings” protests against the Trump administration and what many see as rising fascism in the United States.

More than 3000 No Kings demonstrations were held in all fifty states. Seventy-two of them were in Colorado, including rallies in what are usually considered conservative strongholds like Colorado Springs and Lamar, in the southeastern corner of the state.

Locally, No Kings rallies were held in Denver, Boulder, Broomfield and Lafayette, among other places. About a thousand people rallied in Louisville.

CO Democratic candidates selected at assembly

Roughly fourteen hundred Colorado Democrats selected candidates for the 2026 ballot at the party’s state assembly in Pueblo on Saturday.

The Colorado Capital News Alliance reports there were no big surprises. Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Phil Weiser, Colorado’s Attorney General, made the ballot and will compete against U. S Senator Michael Bennet who petitioned on.

State Senator Julie Gonzales was selected to challenge Senator John Hickenlooper who is seeking reelection to the U.S Senate and like Bennet, petitioned onto the ballot. Two Democrats will vie for the nomination Secretary of State and at least two for Attorney General.

Most candidates highlighted their efforts to fight against the Trump administration and talked about the dangers they feel his administration poses. Republicans hold their state assembly in April, also in Pueblo. The primary election will be on June 30.

Denver Summit FC sets attendance record in home opener

Denver made history this weekend as more than 63,000 fans filled Empower Field for the home opener of Denver Summit FC, the city’s new National Women’s Soccer League team.

The crowd set a new league attendance record, marking the largest turnout ever for an NWSL game. The match ended in a 0-0 draw against the Washington Spirit.

Fans began arriving hours before kickoff, creating a full stadium atmosphere more commonly seen at major NFL games. The event was held at Empower Field at Mile High, which is significantly larger than the venues typically used for NWSL matches.

League officials and team organizers pointed to the turnout as a sign of growing interest in women’s professional soccer.

Five Costilla County Sheriff’s Office members indicted on assault and abuse of corpse charges

Five members of a southern Colorado sheriff’s office, including the sheriff, are now facing criminal charges following a grand jury indictment tied to two separate incidents.

The case centers on the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office, where investigators say misconduct ranged from mishandling human remains to alleged excessive force.

In one incident, a resident reported finding human remains on private property in 2024. Court documents say Sheriff Danny Sanchez and a deputy collected a skull, leaving other remains behind. The report on the case wasn’t completed until months later, and officials say the evidence was improperly handled and documented.

In a separate case, three deputies are accused of using force against a man experiencing a mental health crisis. Investigators say the man was tased multiple times after attempting to leave and suffered injuries, including a broken rib.

Altogether, five people, including the sheriff, his son, and other deputies, face charges such as assault, abuse of a corpse, and official misconduct.

All have turned themselves in. The sheriff has since resigned, and county officials are expected to appoint an interim replacement.
