Studio Session: Flutter

Denver indie-rock band Flutter joined KGNU to share music from their two EPs, Flutter and When You Love Somebody. The group discussed their collaborative songwriting, overcoming setbacks like injuries, and recording with Ryan Wong. They’ve been playing shows around Denver at venues like Hi-Dive and Squire Lounge, with upcoming dates at Skylark Lounge and Mutiny. (Studio Session: 9/18/25)

D Rider: How you doing, guys?

Flutter: Glad to be here.

D Rider: Alright, how about starting us off with a song?

Flutter: [00:01:00] [00:02:00] Alright.

D Rider: Out of Denver, the band Flutter. Why don’t you introduce the band?

Flutter: I’m Josh, I play guitar and sing. To my left, we have Elijah on lead guitar. Going around the room—Steven Riffer on drums, and Andre on bass and backing vocals.

D Rider: Alright, welcome to KGNU. Thanks so much for having us. So, you’re a relatively new band—why don’t you give us a little history?

Flutter: Steven and I have been jamming in different projects since about 2018, and finally landed on Flutter a couple of years ago when we started playing with Andre on bass. Elijah helped round out the form early last year. We wrote and recorded our self-titled EP, Flutter, which you can find on Spotify and Bandcamp. We actually have two EPs up on Bandcamp, along with some merch as well.

D Rider: So you have two?

Flutter: Yeah, we released our debut EP late last year, and then released our self-titled EP in March, which is on Spotify.

D Rider: Nice. Why don’t you hit us with another song—let us hear Flutter a little bit more.

Flutter: Okay. This one is off the Flutter EP. It’s called Heartthrob. [00:04:00]

D Rider: Alright Josh, who gives you the inspiration? Who’s writing for the group, or is it a joint venture?

Flutter: It’s a bit of a joint venture. We each bring little ideas, pieces, and fragments of songs—sometimes even whole demos. When we get into practice, we bounce ideas off each other, restructure things, and even work together lyrically. There’s definitely a communal aspect.

D Rider: So you came out with your second EP. Was that just more inspiration that came quickly after the first one?

Flutter: I think some bands fall into this—sometimes you’re recording a project and it takes a little longer than it needs to. While we were finishing one EP, we had other songs already locked and ready to go. Once the first was released, it wasn’t long before we got those recorded. That EP is called When You Love Somebody, and it’s available on Spotify.

D Rider: Alright, so you had a little handicap before the first one, right? It was delayed?

Flutter: We’ve had a couple of wrist injuries in the band, which slowed us down a bit. We self-recorded our first EP, which is on Bandcamp, and then recorded our second one with our dear friend Ryan Wong. It went a lot faster having someone there to record and mix for us.

D Rider: Okay. I know you don’t want to talk about it—or at least Steve doesn’t want to talk about his metal addition to his arm, right? Steve? No mic?

Flutter: Steve doesn’t have a mic. He was drumming with one hand for a while. In a different project, we played a show down in New Orleans, and Steve took a tumble that set us back.

D Rider: Was that with a hurricane in one hand, or what happened in New Orleans?

Flutter: He was just walking down some really old stairs that crumbled under him. There are a lot of those in old cities. We love it down there, but—watch out.

D Rider: Yeah, one of my favorite places. Do you guys have another tune for us?

Flutter: Yeah, we do. This one’s actually brand new. [00:10:00]

[Song performance]

D Rider: Okay, so you’ve recorded two EPs so far. What about appearances?

Flutter: Yeah, we’ve played several shows around Denver—at the Hi-Dive, the Squire Lounge, and a few others. We’re playing again on October 30th at Skylark Lounge, and also October 4th at the new Mutiny on South Broadway with our good friends Mainland Break and a great new band called The CDs. That one’s all ages, so bring the whole family—it starts around 3:00 PM.

D Rider: Some of Denver’s finest spots. How can people find out more about you? Are you on social media?

Flutter: Yeah, we’re on pretty much everything. Bandcamp has our music, and we’ll have more new music soon. That last song, along with a couple of others, will be recorded in the studio.

D Rider: Okay. So we have the band Flutter out of Denver. They’re playing at the Hi-Dive, Skylark, and a few other places. You can catch them on Facebook and other platforms. Thanks for coming to KGNU, guys. One more tune?

Flutter: Yeah, thanks so much for having us. This is our last one—the title track off our EP When You Love Somebody. [00:12:00]
