Local Gold: Greg Schochet

Greg Schochet and members of Little America joined Greg Schultz for KGNU’s Morning Sound Alternative for a live in-studio session featuring performances from their upcoming album Wyoming in the Windshield. The group showcased their blend of Western swing, country, and Americana, performing songs including “I’m Not a Cowboy, But I Play One on Guitar” and “All I Ever Wanted.” Schochet discussed the making of the record, which was recorded live in the studio in Denver and reflects both personal themes and collaborative musicianship. He also previewed the band’s album release show at eTown Hall in Boulder, where they will perform the full record with special guests, followed by additional performances in Colorado Springs. The session highlighted the band’s tight ensemble playing, humor, and deep roots in Colorado’s live music scene. (Air Date 5/6/2026)

Transcript:

Greg Schultz: Speaking of Jeremy Mohney and Greg Schochet and the boys, we’re going to bring them up now. They’re in the cabaret room. Good morning, guys.

Greg Schochet: Hey, Greg.

Greg Schultz: How are you?

Greg Schochet: Great.

Greg Schultz: I can see you and hear you, so welcome to KGNU. You guys have been here a hundred times. You know the drill. Joining us this morning is Greg Schochet and Little America. They’re here to play some tunes and talk about the new record coming out and the record release party Friday night at eTown. We’re excited to present that show and excited to have you guys here to play some songs and talk about all your music. Thanks so much for coming in.

Greg Schochet: Thanks for having us, man.

Greg Schultz: Why don’t you kick us off with a couple tunes? We’ll come back and chat.

Greg Schochet: Sounds good. Here’s “I’m Not a Cowboy, But I Play One on Guitar.”

Performance: “I’m Not a Cowboy, But I Play One on Guitar”

Greg Schochet: Good morning, radio land. We’ll hit you with another tune here. This is the title track to the new record. It’s called “All I Ever Wanted.”

Performance: “All I Ever Wanted”

Greg Schultz: Oh yeah. Love it. Folks, we have Greg Schochet and Little America in the studio with us. The first tune was “I’m Not a Cowboy, But I Play One on Guitar,” and that last one was your newest, “All I Ever Wanted.” Fantastic. Thanks for coming in, guys. We appreciate you making the trek through the blizzard of Boulder on this cold May morning.

Greg Schochet: Thanks for having us, Greg.

Greg Schultz: You’ve got this stellar band with you. Why don’t the guys introduce themselves and talk about what else they do around town?

Jeremy Mohney: I’m Jeremy Mohney. I play swing music outside of playing with Greg. I’ve got a big band, and we’ve actually recorded in this room before. I’ve got a bunch of original music out on streaming platforms. Connor here is on bass with us today, and we’ve got a whole gang of good musicians. We play original swing music — not just standards.

Greg Schultz: Your sax really mixes well with what you guys are doing. It brings a great element to the sound with the pedal steel, bass, and drums.

Jeremy Mohney: Ah shucks, thanks.

Greg Schultz: Connor plays bass around town with a lot of jazz groups, and Damon’s on drums. Damon, what else have you got going on?

Damon: Right now I’m playing with a couple tribute bands — Rumours, a Fleetwood Mac tribute, Colorado Springsteen, and Peter, Paul and Gary, which is kind of a once-a-year thing in Greeley. Mostly, though, I enjoy supporting Greg and his efforts here. This record was a real pleasure to be part of, and the eTown show is going to be awesome. We’ve got lots of guests joining us.

Greg Schultz: Brett Billings is here too, fantastic pedal steel player. Brett, what have you got going on?

Brett Billings: Greg Schochet and Little America is my main thing right now. I’ve got some High Beams dates this summer and some shows with Sugar Britches up in Fort Collins. Otherwise I’m laying low these days. Glad to be here.

Greg Schultz: Thanks for coming in, you guys. Greg, tell us about the new record and what’s happening Friday night.

Greg Schochet: The record is called Wyoming in the Windshield. That lyric comes from the song we just played, so it’s sort of a title track. I’m really proud of this record. We worked hard on it. There are nine songs — I wrote six of them — and I was trying to get some more personal things down this time around.

We recorded it at Mighty Fine Productions in Denver, all live in the room together. We’ve become a real working band over the last few years, and I wanted the record to sound like us. I’m calling it western swing. There’s definitely a strong swing influence, but it’s also a country record.

Friday night at eTown Hall we’re going to play the whole album front to back in the first set, and then we’ll do some fun jams in the second set. We’ve got guests joining us too: Bonnie and Taylor Sims, Ryan Drickey on fiddle, and my sister Rachel is coming in from Idaho. There are going to be at least three Rachels there.

Greg Schultz: You wrote six songs for the record. Have these songs been around a while?

Greg Schochet: A couple of them have been kicking around for years, and a couple are newer. During and after the pandemic I started focusing more energy on songwriting. I used to write songs constantly when I was younger, and I missed it.

That song “All I Ever Wanted” represents a lot of driving back and forth to southern Idaho where my family lives. I did a lot of that during COVID and during my mom’s decline, so I put a lot of those feelings into that song.

Greg Schultz: We’re happy you’re giving us a sample of what people can hear Friday night.

Greg Schochet: Those people will get exactly what they pay for. We’re good value. I think we’re among the best bands in our price range.

Greg Schultz: I love that. Coming out and seeing somebody live brings a whole different energy. We’re happy to support the show and your new record.

Greg Schochet: We appreciate that so much. In fact, the next song I wrote specifically for Jeremy to sing. Little-known fact: he’ll only sing about trains. This one’s called “Train Crazy.”

Performance: “Train Crazy”

Greg Schultz: Fantastic. That one swings. I really like the way the sax and guitar trade back and forth.

So beyond Friday night, you’ve got another show Saturday too.

Greg Schochet: Saturday night we’re doing it all over again in Colorado Springs at Lulu’s. It’s a killer venue in a historic downtown building. We’re excited to take the show down south.

Greg Schultz: Folks listening south of Monument Hill, get out and see Greg Schochet and Little America. When can people get their hands on the new record?

Greg Schochet: It’s out now on all streaming platforms. We’ll have CDs and LPs available at the show. The LPs were pressed right in Denver by Paramount Plating and Pressing, which is really cool.

Greg Schultz: Nothing better than vinyl.

Greg Schochet: We’ve also got original artwork by my friend Gina Dill from Radford, Virginia. I love the way it came out. It’ll also be up on Bandcamp, and I’m happy to send out CDs and LPs to anyone who orders there. Paradise Found will have copies too.

Greg Schultz: Where can people find you online?

Greg Schochet: Just under my name: Greg Schochet. Instagram and Facebook. That’s S-C-H-O-C-H-E-T.

Greg Schultz: Folks, get out and see Greg Schochet and Little America Friday night at eTown. Doors at 6:00, show at 7:00. He’s playing the whole new record plus more with special guests. Thanks again for coming in and performing for us.

Greg Schochet: Real quick, I just want to thank KGNU for all the support over the years. I probably wouldn’t have much of a music career without this station. Congrats on the new building too. I’m a proud veteran of the old concert hallway days, and I’m excited to see what’s next.

All right, we’ll leave you with an old Flatt and Scruggs tune we like to jam on called “I’ll Go Steppin’ Too.”

Performance: “I’ll Go Steppin’ Too”
