Make Them Hear You! Donald Trump and Russia

Make Them Hear You! is a weekly feature on KGNU, produced by Chris Mohr, letting listeners know how they can have their voices heard on issues up before Congress.

Today, let’s talk Donald Trump and Russia.

Trump, July 27: “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing, I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.” Since then, the CIA says Russia tried to sway the US election, Christopher Steele asserts that Trump may be vulnerable to Russian blackmail, Putin may have ordered a U.S. election upheaval, Trump has declared NATO obsolete and continues to refuse to release tax returns which could shed light on financial ties to Russia, Israel won’t share intelligence with Trump, and Trump may have agreed to sideline the issue of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine after Russia promised to leak the DNC emails. Trump supporters have pointed out inaccuracies in the unproven allegations in Steele’s dossier.

Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham want to to get to the bottom of this. And last Friday, the Senate Intelligence Committee, led by Republican Richard Burr and Democrat Mark Warner, announced a bipartisan investigation of possible Russian interference in the 2016 election, using subpoenas if necessary and following the intelligence wherever it takes them. The success of this committee may depend on the support they receive from their Senate colleagues. If you’re concerned about this, you can contact Senators Michael Bennett and Cory Gardner. Google their names, and their phone numbers pop right up.

Whenever you contact your Senator or Representative, please fact-check your information. Successful communicators boil their concerns down to one issue, preferably one that is being considered this week or next. They’re polite but firm and focused, and ask for a reply. They make it a habit, like brushing their teeth!
