Local Agriculture and Carbon Sequestration

Carbon Sequestration, which is the process of removing carbon dioxide from the air and holding it in a different form, has been getting more and more attention recently. One of the ways it is being looked at in the Boulder Valley is carbon sequestration through agriculture.

Longmont farmer Mark Guttridge, who farms at Ollin Farms on 95th street, is  very interested in carbon sequestration, and he’s trying to get other farmers and members of the community interested too. Ollin Farms will be hosting a Carbon Sequestration Festival on Sunday August 21st from 12:00 to 3:00pm. The event will have activities for kids and families as well as the opportunities to expand the conversation about carbon sequestration through lectures from multiple people who have been studying this process.

“There’s so many great scientists already in this county, there’s so many climate scientists, there’s so many great people studying carbon sequestration and regenerative agriculture; so to get those kind of thought leaders together…is just one ingredient of how we’re going to get a long term sustainable food system going here.”

“There is no more important community right now than the agricultural community…to begin to understand the implications of climate change.” Jim Butler-climate scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Boulder will be speaking at the Carbon Sequestration Festival.
