Usually when you tune in to KGNU at 5 p.m. on a weekday, you hear the BBC Newshour. But last Friday (11/8), in light of the election outcomes stirring the nation and the world this week, we did something a little different.
With Donald Trump projected to win the presidency for the second time, many of us are feeling a whole blend of emotions – rage, sorrow, confusion, disillusionment, disgust, maybe hope? We provided an opportunity for listeners to let us know how they’re feeling about our current political climate.
We broadcasted our special live call-in show in collaboration with BBC Radio 5 Live. 5 Live’s Stephen Nolan program joined us from overseas and took calls on their end as well, so that we could all better understand how this election is impacting the world.
The show was hosted by KGNU’s Jackie Sedley. Sedley was joined via Zoom by Candice Bailey — a Denver-based educator, actionist, and founder/executive director of the nonprofit Light Carrier, dedicated to nationwide interruption of oppression.

Colorado’s 10 electoral voters went to Kamala Harris this election, with 54.5% of voters casting ballots for her. Obviously, that wasn’t enough to push her to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential race in the United States. KGNU broadcasts to primarily-blue regions. Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins, and Nederland all stand with fairly progressive policies and politicians. Our listeners, by-and-large, have expressed complete and utter devastation related to this year’s presidential election outcomes.
