Immigrants shape the fabric of the United States. Despite our country’s origins in racism, discrimination, and oppression, folks from all over the world still come to the U.S. to seek out better lives for themselves and their families.
Donald Trump wants to change that. One of the president-elect’s largest campaign promises was mass deportation of immigrants. And he’s set his sights on Aurora, Colorado as the first point of invasion.
In an October rally, Trump called Aurora a “war zone” and pledged to carry out “Operation Aurora” with a goal of deporting every undocumented immigrant with a gang tie nationwide. He said he’d invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to do so, which gives the president power to detain non-citizens in war times.
Trump has alleged that his administration will use the National Guard to go door to door and detain and deport undocumented families. Governor Polis of Colorado has said that he would reject any attempts to use our National Guard to do that.
KGNU’s Jackie Sedley spoke with Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition’s Raquel Lan-Arellano about Trump’s campaign promises, and how members of her organization – commonly referred to as CIRC – and the populations they serve are feeling right now as they look toward the next four years.
