In 2016, the city of Boulder replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. The city of Denver declared the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day in 2015. On Sunday October 13, Boulder High School hosted a celebration for Indigenous Peoples day.

Dr. Doreen E Martinez, a professor at CSU told KGNU’s Rossana Longo that people need to realize that Native Americans are not just to be relegated to the history books.
“The difficulty that we have had in indigenous communities is that we tend to be understood as this historic past – our history is important but we’re living. So this is why we want to do a day like this to bring us back to that living history when as contemporary people, we’re contemporary people.”
