“The basis for our law suit is that the Obama administration has opened up more than 10 million acres of our public lands for fracking.” -Jeremy Nichols, Climate and Energy Program Director at Wild Earth Guardian
The environmental advocacy group Wild Earth Guardians has filed a lawsuit against the federal government over the climate impacts of oil and gas fracking on public lands. The suit, filed in collaboration with Physicians for Social Responsibility, challenges 397 leases spanning almost 380,000 acres. Jeremy Nichols says many of those are in Colorado.
“Earlier in August the US Bureau of Land Management issued a proposal for more oil and gas leasing in western Colorado and it includes several lease parcels within 5 miles of Rocky Mountain National Park, just outside of Granby on the west slope.”
Pawnee National Grassland in eastern Colorado has also been opened up for fracking in the past year.
