Denver Public Schools Interns on Food Rescue Programs and Mitigating Food Waste

In the summer of 2022, KGNU Media Gardens worked with two interns from Denver Public School’s (DPS) Career and College Success Launch Internship Program. During our 6 weeks together at KGNU’s Denver studios housed at the Buell Media Center, the interns, Jaylene Martel and Kalell Medina, explored and produced pieces on music curation & DJing, as well as youth radio journalism & podcasting. They also produced community calendars, PSAs, and underwriting spots for KGNU. Here is the radio journalism piece our DPS interns produced on food rescue. They interviewed Kathy Stanley, founder of Joy’s Kitchen, and Letisha Steele, CEO of Denver Food Rescue, to provide KGNU listeners with a window into the environmental and communal impacts related to food rescue efforts in Denver. This youth radio journalism piece was first aired on KGNU’s Metro, with host and co-intern supervisor, Dave Ashton, on Tuesday, 7/12/22.
