Denver Comic Con 2017

An estimated 115,000 people flocked to the Convention Center on June 30, July 1 and 2 to participate in Denver Comic Con.

The convention, now in its 6th year, began as a way of raising funds for the non-profit Pop Culture Classroom that promotes literacy and reading programs.

Denver Comic Con itself has a focus on education with a large children’s program and family area.

Some of the star attractions at this years Con included actor John Cusack, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Christopher Paolini – author of the Eragon series, actor Nathan Fillion, Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo from the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things”, and James Phelps and Oliver Phelps who played the Weasley twins in the Harry Potter movie series.

An increased security protocol introduced this year meant no toy weapons were allowed. Despite this, fans of comics, sci-fi and pop culture, walked the halls of the Convention Center in a variety of costumes ranging from the obscure to the unknown.

Denver Comic Con hosted a group wedding where 8 costumed couples got married on the Captain Colorado main stage.

The Comic Con hosted a series of panel discussions on a variety of topics, including panels on diversity and inclusivity in pop culture. The Denver Film Society hosted a panel on the lack of female representation in comics. The discussion focused on The Bechdel Test (which asks whether a work of fiction features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man) and its relevance to current pop and film culture.
