Boulder County Farmers Plan 2nd Food Delivery to Standing Rock

“As a farmer I believe that food has energy and how I can help Standing Rock is I can send my food up there, send my energy up there.”

In late October, Longmont farmer Rod Brueske delivered almost 1,000 of fruit and vegetables grown by Front Range farmers to the water protectors at Standing Rock.  A second delivery is planned the week of Thanksgiving.

On Saturday November 5th, at the farmers markets in Longmont and Boulder, donations were being accepted to assist in the purchase of that local food for the next delivery.  People also wrote down messages of solidarity in a book that will accompany the food delivery.

Mark Guttridge, of Ollin Farms who was at the booth at the Longmont farmers market said there has been a huge response.  “A lady this morning came and donated a beautiful feather with a note that her ancestors were on the Trail of Tears and how she supports them. Those sentiments that we can send with the food. To me it’s really an energetic thing that we’re doing.  As a farmer I believe that food has energy and how I can help Standing Rock is I can send my food up there, send my energy up there and I think we’ve seen that over and over today, pouring a lot of heart and soul and intention into that delivery.”

The local farmers are partnering with Sustainable Resilient Longmont to collect the donations.

Tracy Halward, vice-chair of the non-profit says that this was an issue that aligns with their mission “this was something that our board of directors and our membership really believed in.”

8 year old Asher was one of the people donating money and sending messages of support. “I’m donating my money because the water protection is important to me because my ancient ancestors are Navajos.”   Asher wrote “Help keep our water safe” in the book of solidarity that will accompany the second food delivery.

On Saturday November 12th there will be a donation booth at the Longmont and Boulder Farmers Markets again for funds being used to purchase locally grown food to send to Standing Rock.  On
Saturday  November 19th,  extreme winter clothes and supplies donations will be accepted at both the Longmont and Boulder Farmers Markets and then in the afternoon at the Ollin Farmstand from 2-5pm

November 15th is national day of solidarity with Standing Rock, there will be a gathering on Pearl St Mall at noon in front of the courthouse.

There will be a booth at both the Longmont and Boulder Farmers markets on Saturday November 5th where people can:

1) Find out more information about the effort to send nutritious local food up to the camps at Standing Rock
2) Make a financial contribution to assist in the purchase of that local food for the next delivery
3) Write down a message of solidarity in a book that will accompany the food in delivery
