ART Talk – Don Coen’s “The Migrant Series”

Don Coen is an internationally acclaimed artist who has lived in Boulder for over forty years.

His current show, The Migrant Series, curated by Ann Daley, is running through May 27 at The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMOCA).

“If you want to be an artist, you must be self driven… Having a gift is one thing. Using the gift is something quite another.” — Don Coen

“The Migrants” is a powerful body of work that has taken Don ten years to create. It depicts migrant workers across the US on a huge scale in super-realism.

In this interview, Don talks about his childhood experiences living in rural Colorado that nurtured his artistic gift and love of the land.

About A R T Talk: Artists in Boulder are often challenged by a competitive and not so supportive environment. In an effort to bring greater awareness for the arts in Boulder and strengthen and celebrate our own art community, we are working on a radio series called “A R T Talk”. The program is hosted by Susan Knickle, one of Boulder’s long time art curators, and produced by Yukari Miyamae.

A R T Talk shares “shop talk” by artists, local and beyond. Susan encourages lively interchanges between artists about techniques, approaches, and their mediums and concepts along with their experiences with the arts in their community. We are currently planning a series of six interviews with unique and local artists who work in many mediums (i.e sculptors, jewelers, ceramicists, painters, installation artists, etc.) some of whom literally travel to the ends of the earth seeking creative experiences.
