Art and Alzheimer’s

“They’re far more engaged if they can connect to it personally.”

The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) has created an access tour tailored towards people with dementia and their caregivers. It is part of the museum’s goal to engage people with disabilities.  Nicole Dial-Kay, Education Coordinator at BMoCA says the tours are modeled on a method of teaching developed by the museum of Modern Art in New York. The Assistant Director of that program came to Boulder to train educators in the teaching method which is Dial-Kay says is very slow, story-focused and attentive to the needs of the viewer.  “What the individuals want to talk about is part of the conversation.”

The Alzheimer’s Association has worked with BMoCA to develop the tours which have been having for two years.

BMoCA Access Programs engage individuals with disabilities and special needs in the world of contemporary art. Specially trained docents and workshop leaders offer tours and hands-on art making workshops based on the exhibition. Special requests are encouraged and welcomed. BMoCA is equipped with a wheelchair lift and is fully handicap accessible.
